Always interested in the Arts, Val took up pottery at evening class, continuing later to teach it. She then worked in the pottery in her home village of Culross, Fife, making thrown stoneware in her preferred simple modern shapes and colours.
Val also enjoys making larger, handbuilt work, often incorporating agateware clay and coloured engobe decoration. The work is finished with a hazy micro-crystalline glaze which adds an extra dimension to these one-off pieces.
Inspiration comes from the contrasts and camouflage found in the natural environment, the patina of old stone, and the play of light and shade.
