I am a Dutch ceramicist based in Dundee. I have always had a keen interest in how things work: the mechanics inside a machine, the bones inside a body, natural structures that reflect geological processes. Initially this led to a career in science and it now informs my ceramics practice. I work in stoneware, using hand-building techniques and moulds, decorated with slips, oxides and glazes.
My work incorporates mechanical elements and hidden internal structures. Rough or industrial external surfaces contrast with more delicate interiors – sometimes forming a functional vessel and sometimes just a tactile object to hold in your hands and turn around.
I also makes quite a lot of octopuses because they are wonderful.
