“Richard started woodturning as a hobby in 2000 and in 2005 left his job (as a chemical engineer with an international role in a unit managing UK Climate Change prevention programmes) to become a full time turner. In 2007 he was accepted onto the Register of Professional Turners (under the auspices of the Worshipful Company of Turners of London) and last year as a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
He makes high quality work with attention to design to work with the inherent beauty of the figure and grain. Richard finds wood an exciting material to work with, providing a huge range of colours and forms. He use mainly British native woods, increasingly from local sources, but with some exotics, especially when he can be sure that they have come from sustainably managed forests.
Often with his signature inlays, most of his work is functional. Other pieces, such as his discus art forms, are purely for display.”
