Michelle makes functional slipware pottery. Working in red earthenware clay, she throws the majority of her work and also hand-builds some pieces using slabs of clay.
The pots are decorated using traditional slip trailing and sgraffito techniques. After dipping them in creamy white slip (liquid clay), coloured slips, oxides, stains and glazes are brushed and trailed on top. Michelle then scratches through the surface using a needle to draw in to red clay beneath.
Michelle is based in Edinburgh where she works full-time from a workshop in her garden. She trained by working as an assistant to Bärbel Dister at Cromarty Pottery.
