A chance meeting -over 30 years ago – with a local basketmaker awoke my interest in learning the craft which was nearly dying out at the time.
For a while I had wanted to have a hobby where I could produce the raw materials and create my own designs, thereby creating a truely low carbon Scottish product.
I soon realised that I had to learn a lot of different skills in order to get for the former to the latter! Moving to a small croft in The Southern Uplands and joining the newly formed Scottish Basketmakers Circle (1988) enabled the first willow bed to be planted and the weaving skills to be honed with the help of other members and visiting tutors.
Many courses later – either as a student or tutor – I have in the last 10 years particularly enjoyed making sculptural organic forms with my homegrown willows.
