Howard Callow trained as a graphic designer at college in Essex, before moving to Scotland over 20 years ago to pursue a career as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. Since then his work took him away from art for a while, until he met his wife, a ceramic artist, and he found his true calling.
Howard makes a range of whimsical and charming stoneware sculptures of fish, birds and other creatures. He enjoys playing on words and sayings in his work, as well as taking inspiration from various names of fish and birds, creating his very own artistic and humorous interpretation based on these. This has resulted in creations with titles such as ‘Searching For a Sole Mate’ and ‘A Wee Plaice of my Own’ (both sculptures based on flat fish).
Found objects are often incorporated in his sculptures, usually in the form of driftwood plinths or backgrounds, but also things like rusty nails and bolts and various other items he comes across when out walking with his dog.
