Cyril Reed

Born in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, in 1942, Cyril studied at Sunderland College of Art, specialising in painting to National Diploma level. He graduated from Leeds University Institute of Education in 1964 and took up a career in teaching . Following a period of just over two years at a boys secondary school in Leeds, he moved to Lincolnshire as Head of Art and Design and, subsequently, Head of the Technology Faculty at a grant-maintained school in Gainsborough. Following early retirement from teaching in 1993, he moved to Sutherland in 1997.

Cyril has exhibited jointly with his wife Hazel and has taken part in many group shows. In 1983 he was invited to exhibit in the ‘New Drawings‘ exhibition at Rufford Craft Centre, Nottinghamshire, which included pieces by Frank Auerbach, Elizabeth Frink, Roger Hilton, Henry Moore, Victor Newsome, Graham Sutherland and Keith Vaughan.

Cyril is a member of VASu [Visual Arts Sutherland], ESAS [The East Sutherland Art Society] and is a former member of HOS [Highland Open Studios]. He has taken part in many group shows, and his work is collected both in the UK and abroad.

The mood of northern Highland land and seascape, affected so much by the ever changing weather and light, provides a wealth of ideas for work. Cyril still values highly the emphasis placed on drawing skills during his art college days and regularly makes sketchbook studies, often going back to favourite places such as Loch Fleet. These serve to identify important visual elements and, as permanent records, can be revisited and used as a source of ideas which, when combined with memory and emotion, serve to inform the development of his paintings. Although he usually works in acrylics, he also occasionally produces watercolours, oils and mixed media work.
